A Lakewood mother was charged with murdering her two children in her house on Tuesday, according to a press release from the office of Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

The prosecutor’s office said 27-year-old Naomi Elkins drowned her 3-year-old and 1-year-old children, and also stabbed the 1-year-old.

Members of the Lakewood police appeared at the house at 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, the press release said. There, they found members of the Orthodox volunteer emergency medical service organization Hatzolah trying to save the toddlers’ lives. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene, and the prosecutor’s office said an investigation found that Elkins was responsible for the deaths.

Elkins was arrested on Tuesday and taken to Ocean County Jail. She was charged with two counts of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The Haredi news outlet Lakewood Alerts issued a statement saying that based on guidance from rabbis and lay leaders, it wouldn’t cover the story.

“Many of you have reached out to us asking why we haven’t posted about it,” the statement said. “We believe that some things are too painful and hurtful to be shared without a valid reason, and we choose to follow the guidance of our rabbanim.”

Another Haredi news outlet, Lakewood Scoop, covered the story in vague terms and referred readers to reach out for mental health support if needed. Lakewood Scoop said it wrote the article with guidance from rabbis and lay leaders.

Lakewood is considered New Jersey’s fastest-growing town, partly because of the Haredi community’s high birth rate and migration from Brooklyn, where many families have been priced out of the local housing market.
